Jurline Redeaux
Jurline Redeaux, is the Executive Director of New Impression. a social services nonprofit organization. She holds a Masters in Social Work from the University of Southern California. Upon retiring from Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services in 2008, she and two other social workers founded New Impression. New Impression advocates for the elimination of stigma associated with mental health, provides cancer support services and aims to eliminate health care disparities. She is an Endometrial Cancer Survivor and the author of Conversations With Mom.
My Story
In 2017, I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in my 60's. I was postmenopausal so I was alarmed when I saw blood. It was a red flag for me and I saw my doctor immediately. Yes, I made an appointment with my general practitioner, who referred me to a OBGYN, who did a biopsy. This doctor referred me to what he felt was the best an oncologist. I was not as fearful initially as the doctors were telling me the steps along the way. The first thing I was stressed about was to have to tell my daughter (and my family) I had cancer. I struggled with anxiety and depression coupled with having to endure treatments, I sought support through groups and ultimately held on to the promises of God. I had to embrace the positive, as it works for me and did not know my stage initially. I later learned that I was Stage IV. In 2018, I was selected by ECANA (Endometrial Cancer Action Network for African Americans) to join their organization as a Community Empowerment Partner. I am now is a certified Community Empowerment Partner. In this role, and I am educating and giving my personal testimony to the community and others about facts associated with endometrial/uterine cancers. I was ecstatic and felt honored when I learned that My Sister My Friend Breast Cancer Support would share my story socially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
